Greg Iles (1961– )
Greg Iles is a contemporary Mississippi writer and novelist, whose genre is the suspense thriller. Each of his 11 New York Times best-selling books explores the seedier and more disturbing themes of human paranoia and behavior reminiscent of early Stephen King novels. He wrote his first novel, Spandau Phoneix, in 1993 at the age of 32, and was awarded the Mississippi Author’s Award for Fiction for Black Cross, a swift-actioned, hard-hitting historical thriller set in Nazi Germany. His books have been translated into nearly a dozen languages and are sold in more than 20 countries.
Iles was born in 1961 in Stuttgart, Germany, the son of a medical clinician at the U.S. embassy during the height of the Cold War. When he was young, his family moved to Natchez, Miss., where he has lived ever since. He graduated from the University of Mississippi and started his own band, living the life of an on-the-road musician until 1993, when his first novel was published. He gave up music and has been writing ever since. He still lives in Natchez, the setting for many of his books.
